When you first start navigating the world with a power wheelchair, you might feel a little intimidated by all the safety hazards and accessibility barriers that stand in your way. Fortunately, it gets much easier with time and practice, as your device begins to feel like an extension of your body.

Of course, as with any motorized vehicle, safety should always be your number one priority when operating a power wheelchair. Not sure where to begin? Read on for some quick tips on wheelchair safety from the experts at Serene Mobility & Lifts!

Buckle Up

First and foremost, always wear your seatbelt when operating your power wheelchair! Just like the seatbelts in a vehicle, the seatbelt on your power wheelchair is essential – especially when you are out in public, where an accident is more likely to occur. If you find the seatbelt that came with your wheelchair uncomfortable, you can look into replacing it with an alternative.

Read the Manual

Before you start operating a new power wheelchair, make sure to read all the information in the user manual. Keep in mind that not all power wheelchairs are the same, and pay close attention to any model-specific safety instructions provided by the manufacturer.

Hold Steady

Power wheelchairs are heavy and cumbersome, and may be prone to tipping over. Avoid inclines steeper than about 7.1 degrees, and maintain your balance by keeping your hands and feet within the framework of your power wheelchair at all times.

Watch Out for Obstacles

Pay close attention to the path ahead of you when operating your power wheelchair outdoors, or in crowded indoor spaces. Avoid hazardous terrain, steer clear of puddles and potholes, and give the people and obstacles around you plenty of space. Practice extreme caution around children and animals, whose movements may be unpredictable.

Keep Up with Maintenance

Last but not least, make sure to follow all the maintenance instructions in the user manual provided with your wheelchair. Keeping your power wheelchair in top condition will ensure safe, reliable operation for years to come.
